Endometriosis is a condition where the tissue that usually lines the inside of the uterus starts growing outside it. Symptoms may include pelvic pain, fatigue, severe menstrual pain, pain during intercourse, and in severe cases, bladder or intestinal pain. This condition can sometimes affect the ovaries and may result in infertility for some women.

Diagnosis and Treatment

To detect endometriosis, your doctor will perform a pelvic exam. Additional diagnostic methods may include an ultrasound, a laparoscopic procedure, or a biopsy.
The initial treatment for endometriosis typically involves hormonal medications. Additionally, your doctor may suggest other medications and therapies to help manage pain.
Minimally invasive surgery for endometriosis is offered by the skilled surgeons at Coastal Bend Women’s Center. This includes laparoscopic surgery, where small incisions in the abdominal wall enable the removal of endometriosis. In severe cases, more extensive surgery known as laparotomy may be necessary.
