A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection affecting any part of the urinary system, such as the bladder, urethra, or kidneys. These infections are typically caused by bacteria that commonly originate from the digestive tract or rectal area.
Standard medical treatment for a UTI typically involves a three-day course of antibiotics. If your UTI is sexually transmitted, your partner will also need treatment. For recurrent infections, you may be referred to a specialist for further evaluation and management.
Many women may misidentify their symptoms as a yeast infection and attempt self-treatment with over-the-counter medications, when in reality, they have a vaginal infection requiring antibiotic therapy.
